The Tamil Islam- A Letter

Dear Jayamohan,

The Sufi Islamic classes you are organizing at your place mark a new beginning for Tamil culture and Tamil thought. For a long time, we have not engaged deeply with the Islamic culture of Tamil Nadu, despite its profound roots in our history.

Tamil Islam is unique, with its own traditions, philosophy, and cultural expressions. We have had great Sufi masters such as Peer Mohammed, Nagore Andavar, and many others. Likewise, we have distinguished Islamic philosophers such as Sadhakkathullah Appa and celebrated poets like Umaru Pulavar.

I believe you know that the tomb of Umaru Pulavar was built by Hindus, a powerful symbol of the cultural harmony that once existed in Tamil society. Today, however, we are gradually losing touch with the Islamic traditions of Tamil Nadu. There are forces that seek to dilute this unique heritage by replacing its local character with a more Arabized identity.

Preserving the originality and richness of Tamil Islamic culture is an important task in our times. Your efforts in this direction are highly commendable and deserve appreciation.

With regards,

Raja Muhammed Noor
