One’s own duty

Dear Mohan,

Your speech about one’s duty towards oneself was an eye-opener. In India, tradition and family have taught people that their primary obligation is to serve their families, kith and kin, leaving little room for concern for society or for their own spiritual evolution.

Hinduism teaches that every individual has a birthright and a duty to pursue intellectual development, embark on a spiritual quest, and seek fulfilment. According to Hindu scriptures, human existence is a journey that continues through successive births. If a person makes no progress on this journey in the present birth, remaining confined to the same place and performing mundane duties monotonously, he is wasting this precious opportunity. In doing so, he may be obstructing his own spiritual liberation.
