Indian and Western Philosophy- A letter

Dear Jayamohan,

Your London lecture has drawn a comparison between Indian philosophy and Western philosophy, which has helped clarify many doubts I’ve had for quite some time. Indian philosophy primarily focuses on the concepts of the soul and Brahman, while Western philosophy explores a wider array of topics, including the existence of humanity, the foundations of human relationships, and fundamental moral questions. Issues such as the role of the state, the responsibilities of citizens, the dynamics of power, the ways individuals connect with one another, and the relationship between language and human happiness are all pertinent concerns we face today.

I once asked a prominent Indian orator why Indian philosophy does not address these topics. He responded by claiming that Western philosophy analyzes unnecessary worldly matters, while Indian philosophy remains focused on the essential concepts of God, Brahman, and the soul, asserting that Indian philosophy is therefore superior. However, that explanation did not satisfy me. Your lecture has provided me with a more definitive answer. Thank you.
