Argument – A letter

Education and argument

Dear Jeyamohan

I used to often wonder, “Why are we arguing so much?” Arguing is the best way to avoid learning anything. We are arguing for argument’s sake. We engage in these arguments solely to establish our own existence. We never know if we possess the necessary knowledge to effectively argue a particular point. We have lived in a densely populated nation for a significant period. Our primary source of amusement was engaging in conversation with each other. I’ve observed individuals in small villages engaging in daylong conversation. We have ingrained the habit of arguing into our fundamental mindset. Our primary artistic expressions also take the form of arguments. In our place, jatra is the major folk artform; it is in the form of argument, mostly silly talk. I have a proposal: we should outlaw arguments in any serious class in India, as they hinder the teaching and learning process.
