Dear Jeyamohan,
Generally, ordinary people who only read Facebook pages or those who read occasionally tend to judge writers based on their ‘modesty’ or ‘humbleness.’ A ‘modest’ writer is always praised as a ‘good person.’ He is severely criticized if he has some pride about his writing or intellectual quality. These common men never expect that any businessmen or politicians need to be modest. In In their view, modesty is a quality that should only be possessed by thinkers and writers. The writer, thinker, and literary reader should admit that they are more ordinary people than others. If they do not admit that, they will be criticized.
Our Facebook trolls consistently demonstrate this mentality. I am really impatient about this. Why should an intellectual be modest in a world filled with people he considers stupid? I dare to ask why an intellectual should consider a common man a human being. This reasoning is due to his belief that the essence of humanity is a deep yearning for knowledge. It is disgusting to see some writers who bow down to the intimidation of their inferiors and pretend to be modest. The sign of true knowledge is not so-called social behavior but dedication to wisdom. The writer insults wisdom itself when he claims to be nothing more than a common man.
