Introduction to Traditional Tamil Literature and Saiva Poetry

It is a fact that anyone who has not read, appreciated, and gained at least some understanding of classical Tamil literature cannot develop even a basic understanding of Tamil culture, Shaivism, or Vaishnavism.

Those who are interested often buy and collect such books. However, they find it difficult to read them because these works were not written for the kind of reading we practise today. Modern reading is essentially an individual, private activity. This mode of reading became widespread among us only after the introduction of the European system of education. Classical Tamil literature, however, is rooted in an entirely different mode of reading.

Without understanding this traditional mode of reading, it is difficult to study these works meaningfully. To learn them within their traditional framework and appreciate their finer nuances, one needs the guidance of someone qualified to teach them systematically.

Marabin Mainthan Muthiah has studied classical Tamil literature systematically for over thirty years. He has also earned the distinction of being a Vidwan of a Shaivite Adheenam, a traditional Shaivite monastic institution. He has been teaching people to appreciate classical Tamil literature and understand and internalise its subtleties.

This is the fifth programme he has conducted on behalf of our organisation. The programme will offer practical guidance in reading and appreciating classical Tamil literature, along with an introduction to the Shaivite Tirumurai, the sacred corpus of devotional hymns and texts.
