Can we give ourselves to others?

Dear Jeyamohan,

I am a literary reader and spend a lot of time reading books, though my family is dead against it. But I find my inner peace and contentment in reading, and I feel my personal growth through it. But occasionally I had a question: am I stealing the time and money of my children? Don’t they have a right to me?

A.R.

Dear A.R.,

Every mature person can feel the truth inside; he does not ‘belong’ to anyone. No human being here is ‘unlimitously indebted’ to others. It is a popular social myth. We have some duties towards others that we have to do. But those duties are limited to an extent; the society already fixed it. Limit every relation to that level and save your mind and life for yourself. Then only you have your own life. If you imagine that you are giving yourself to others ‘limitlessly,’ you will start to believe that they have to give it back; that will never happen. This foolishness is the hell our elders are now living.
