Dear Jeyamohan,
Encouraging children to read is not an easy task. Everything around them seems to discourage reading. The media, schools, teachers, and even friends actively contribute to this. To take reading seriously, they often feel they must become lonely, unsocial individuals. My daughter has mentioned that her friends tease and laugh at her for reading books, and her teacher also makes fun of her in class for doing so. Additionally, my relatives frequently advise me to prevent my children from reading “other” books. This is the challenging situation we face. We must swim against the tide to support our children.
