Dr. Mariraj, a distinguished physician and professor of modern medicine, has previously conducted an introductory course for us, designed to make modern medicine accessible to anyone with a general interest in the subject. We are pleased to announce that these classes will now be offered once again.
Why should a thoughtful person learn about modern medicine?
Because it is intimately connected with every aspect of our lives.
Most of us turn to medicine only after we fall ill. Yet, understanding modern medicine is even more important if we wish to preserve our health and prevent illness. For that, we need a basic understanding of the structure of the human body, the way it functions, its relationship with the environment, and the nature of diseases that affect it.
Modern medicine is not a field of knowledge meant only for doctors. It is a complete intellectual discipline, with its own logic, methods, and a comprehensive understanding of the human body and the natural world. Those who attended the previous sessions repeatedly remarked that studying modern medicine in this way was an intellectually exciting and deeply rewarding educational experience.
The time of a specialist like Dr. Mariraj is extremely valuable. It is only because he is our friend that he has agreed to devote his time to conducting this course. That is also why these classes cannot be organized frequently.
Those who practise yoga and meditation will find this course especially useful, as it provides a clearer understanding of the physiological processes underlying their practices.
Readers of literature and those interested in modern European thought will also benefit from the course. Modern medicine may be seen as the practical expression of the worldview that Western philosophy gradually developed over the past several centuries. Those who wish to understand modern medicine as a coherent system of thought will find this course particularly valuable.
This is not a medical camp. No diagnosis, treatment, or individual medical consultation will be provided. However, those who wish to better understand their own illnesses will gain a solid grounding in the principles of modern medicine, enabling them to make better sense of medical explanations and treatments.
In the Tamil intellectual and cultural sphere, countless misconceptions and misleading campaigns have created deep mistrust of modern medicine. Much of what is marketed today as “alternative medicine” thrives upon this manufactured distrust. Understanding what modern medicine truly is will help us avoid pseudoscientific treatments and make informed choices about reliable medical care and qualified physicians.
This course offers a profound introduction to a fundamental field of knowledge—one that surrounds us constantly, one that none of us can avoid, one that every family inevitably needs, and one that may become essential to any of us at any moment.
We warmly welcome everyone to join us.
