The new generation is, in a way, already quite close to Western music. Their ears are already seasoned to its sounds and structures. For us, the older generation, there is a great barrier to listening to Western music. Our minds are conditioned to believe that the long, sustained notes in Western music are apashruti or somehow musically incorrect.
I hope the younger generation will be able to overcome this barrier and make use of the opportunity to understand and appreciate Western music. It may open up a new way of listening and also help them understand the structure, harmony, and symmetry that underlie Western art.
