Your videos, letter.

Dear Jeyamohan,

Your videos had been absent for a while. Seeing them begin to appear again gives me hope. For some reason, I had come to think that you had stopped posting videos altogether. These videos are something I regularly listen to during my morning walks. Most people walk while listening to songs. But one cannot listen to songs for a long time. Within a minute or two of listening to music, the mind starts wandering in all directions. Then one ends up listening to other conversations unnecessarily, which eventually drift into contemporary politics, cinema, and similar subjects.

When I walk while listening to these videos, I get at least half an hour each day for deeper reflection and for developing a comprehensive philosophical perspective on the world. Your videos are never about simple, casual topics. They do not discuss everyday politics or gossip. They had the quality of a writer speaking directly to his serious readers. I would very much like you to continue making such videos.

In one of your videos, you mentioned that you felt there were not many viewers for them. In today’s environment, what spreads through social media is mostly negative news. Algorithms tend to amplify negative content, and therefore it receives more attention. Because it receives more attention, even more of it gets produced. Moreover, most criticisms are merely reactions to some other popular video. For example, if you criticize something Vijay said, a section of those who paid attention to Vijay’s statement will then notice you. People often move from one video to another in this way.

Not only that, most people do not have an entry point into serious subjects of this kind. But they already have an entry point into politics and cinema. People can move toward something unfamiliar only from something familiar. Only after finding such a starting point can they enter into subjects like these. Ordinary people usually speak today as a continuation of what they were discussing yesterday.

Therefore, it is natural that talks of this nature may not attract a large audience immediately. But every person who comes here is important. There are many people like me who cannot read much because of vision-related difficulties. For us, these videos have become a valuable period of quality time. That is why I hope they will continue to be released.

Through them, there is a feeling of being in continuous conversation with you. Every day, having a writer and a thinker speak to us consistently is one of the greatest opportunities this century offers us. People like me should make use of it.

With affection,
Saravanakumar.
