Birds and nature _ A letter

To beloved Jeyamohan sir,

Myself Sahana from Chennai ,studying 9th grade. I visited Nithyavanam for bird watching class along with my younger  brother Krithik maanav and mother Preethi and this is my first time.

We reached on Thursday evening. On the way, we saw two elephants and got excited. Before dinner, we played “20 questions “to find birds name game with Vijaya barathi sir and had dinner.

As we were all put together in dorm, enjoyed playing with Srinidhi,Dev, Thamiran, little Mazhaiyaal and slept late. Next day, in class we learnt many interesting things from Eswar sir and Vijaya barathi sir. Our mornings and evenings were filled with bird watching and on the first day itself we saw 30 different types of birds and noted it down.

We got attached to all kids and enjoyed our break times together. During one lunch break myself, Mazhaiyaal and Sai Nishita were building nest and decorating it with flowers for small sparrows and butterflies and parents were chatting. Suddenly, all were super excited to see eagle flying and a small bird flying along with it. Barathi sir identified it as Drongo chasing eagle to protect its nest.

I have planned to do bird journaling that was introduced in class. We didn’t know how two and half days passed and on the last day we were sad to leave everyone. I would like to thank Eswar sir and Vijaya barathi sir for letting us know about birds in a beautiful way and Mani uncle for taking care of us.

We started home and near Nithyavanam exit gate, Maanav showed a kite sitting on the wire and our journey started.

Dear Sahana,

Birdwatching is not a hobby; it should be a lifestyle. It should divert our attention away from commercially made entertainment, which reduces us to mere consumers. It should lead us toward nature. Through nature, we can enter the arts, sciences, philosophy, and finally, real spiritualism.

Jeyamohan .
