The world of plants- A Letter

Dear Jeyamohan sir,

This is Kaavyan from Chennai, studying in 9th grade. A few days back, I had travelled to Vellimalai to attend the Botany(தாவரவியல்) course taught by Logamadevi mam. It was a truly enriching experience learning about plants. The course opened my eyes in many different ways and completely changed my perspective about Botany.

I was fascinated by the different kinds of plants shown by Logamamdevi mam. The sessions taught by her were interactive and knowledgeable with a bit of humour occasionally. I was also surprised to find out that Botany is not as hard as I thought. Logamadevi mam also made sure that the sessions weren’t boring. Be it dividing into teams and going on a Botanical hunt or indulging in a tree hugging therapy or just sitting and having a quiz, she made sure we weren’t diverted. I also learned about the interdependency between animals and plants. An example is the relationship between figs and fig wasps.

I had already attended the Bird watching course in October 2024. Attending both the Bird watching and Botany (தாவரவியல்) courses made me realize the interconnectedness between two vast fields, Ornithology and Botany. Going forward, I am willing to build my knowledge in as many aspects as possible. Hope to visit Vellimalai often in the upcoming months.

Thanks and Regards,

Kaavyan

Dear Kaviyan,

Thank you for the letter. The primary fact that we have to understand is we can make anything an interesting subject or a boring one. The way we approach it is the key factor of learning.

If we learn a thing in a small room, as simple data, and try to memorize it, any subject will become boring. Learning in a proper atmosphere from an able teacher will make a subject fascinating.

Moreover, anything we learn, either science or the humanities, is actually about the cosmos, nature, and human beings. If we start studying a subject to understand its totality, it will become extremely interesting. We are trying to develop that kind of education.
