Consumerism and literature- A letter

Dear Jeyamohan,

Your speech about the use of literature or literature as an education is intriguing. You categorically deny the idea that literature is an entertainment or consumption material. I concur, but in today’s world, everything transforms into a means of consumption. We live in a period characterized by consumerism. In consumerism, the consumer is the master, and all others are his servants. Indeed, the most exploited individual is the master. However, he is deluding himself into believing that he is in control of everything, supplying it as he pleases. I was a teacher for more than 35 years, and I observed the mood slowly changing. Teachers became servants instead of gurus, and students transformed from disciples into consumers. You are actually fighting with the general mentality of this era. Creative writers consistently challenge the prevailing mentality.

Subramanyam, M.
