Unused mental energy and depression

Dear Jeyamohan,

In your speech about writing fiction, you mentioned a curious thing: that the energy inside us is deposited as unused and the words within us are unexpressed, causing depression. As a psychologist, I want to confirm this is a very practical fact we are witnessing around us.

Depression haunts almost everyone in our society. The day-to-day life, ‘the hunt,’ is easier in today’s world. As a result, most middle-class individuals are not utilizing their psychological and creative potential. What we imagine as a comfortable life is actually a lazy one, and it also creates a kind of psychological obesity.

Actually, our students and officegoers are working very hard, and they have no peaceful time to think and ponder upon their lives. However, the lack of creative activity keeps their mental energy idle. This unused mental energy contributes to the depression present in our society.

This is a strange situation that usually arises when a society emerges from poverty into a middle-class one. We have to understand the current scenario and plan our lives according to it. We have to find our ways to be creative and psychologically active. Instead, we spend our time on social media, a platform that primarily aims to instill negativity and anxiety.
