Internet addiction and nature

Dear Jeyamohan,

Your talk about introducing nature to our children is fascinating. I am convinced that this approach is the most effective way to help children overcome internet addiction.

However, the real issue is that if a child is already addicted to the internet, introducing him to nature may not be effective. Because to observe nature and be in it, we need patience and a keen mind. Internet addiction ruins our patience and our observation skills.

A person who is addicted to the internet cannot enjoy nature; he may feel it is dull and boring. Because nature has no meaning; it is plain. The serenity and peace we feel in it is the result of this plainness. It is above our earthly life and its pleasures and challenges. We are attributing meaning to it. An internet addict cannot fill nature with his meaning.

If a person personally feels that he is addicted and is earnestly trying to come out of it, being with nature is beneficial. We cannot persuade others, particularly youngsters, to observe nature. For young adults and children, we may consider it as a precautionary measure to divert them from internet addiction.
