A family of intellectuals

Dear Jeyamohan,

I have been watching your philosophy classes in the USA and Europe. They seem to resemble family gatherings, as many attendees come with their families, and I noticed young children among them. It was a pleasant surprise. My question is, are you trying to create an exclusive community of readers?

Ramki

Dear Ramki,

Yes, they indeed create a family atmosphere. I would dare to say they form an extended family. However, I am not trying to create one; it is a natural evolution. You should understand why. These friends are avid literary readers and have a deep interest in philosophy and spirituality. Consequently, they cannot relate to the typical Indian or Tamil diaspora, which tends to be very earthly and practical. They often find general party conversations dull. As a result, they seek intellectual company, and they find it here. These friends are intellectuals and connoisseurs of art, and they feel comfortable with one another. Gradually, strong relationships develop among them. Generally, individuals with an intellectual foundation create an intellectual environment in their homes, and their families share that mindset as well. They, in turn, bring their families into this atmosphere, and they become one family. This is both natural and essential.
