Can a writer be a consultant?

Dear Jeyamohan,

A friend of mine recently asked me an interesting question: Can a writer be a consultant in matters of life? He was referring to you.

I told him that Jeyamohan does not offer advice to his readers in the conventional sense. Rather, he engages them in a continuous dialogue about life. Through literature, philosophy, personal experiences, and reflections on human existence, he helps his readers examine their own lives and understand the world around them from different perspectives.

Many of the great writers of the world have undertaken this role. Their engagement with readers goes beyond literature itself. It becomes a discourse on life, its complexities, its moral dilemmas, and its possibilities. In your case, I feel that this dialogue is an integral part of your intellectual and spiritual mission.

A writer may not be a consultant in the professional sense, offering ready-made solutions to the problems of others. But a great writer can certainly become a companion in the reader’s journey through life, helping them discover questions they had never thought to ask and possibilities they had never considered.

Perhaps that is the distinction. A consultant gives us answers to our problems; a great writer helps us understand the problems themselves.

With regards,

Rajendran
