About completing a task..

Dear Mr.Jeyamohan,

My name is Balamurali. I am a software engineer working in Ireland. I have read some of your writings, and they feel very deep. Sometimes I don’t fully understand, but they always touch me.

I am starting to write my first short novel. It is about a boy’s longing for a horse. I often think big, but it is hard for me to finish what I start. This is not only about writing—many things I begin, I leave unfinished. I don’t know what kind of mental state this is, or why it happens to me.

I also listen to your speeches on the “Unified Wisdom” YouTube channel. They inspire me a lot.

If you happen to read this, I would be grateful for your advice on how to deal with this in life. Thank you for your work.

With respect,

Balamurali

Dear Balamurali,

Generally the reasons for not completing a novel are the following.

  • Assessing the work while writing and wondering whether it is going right.
  • Getting opinions from friends and others before finishing.
  • Having a preconceived notion about the form of the novel.

So the ways to write a novel without a break or restarting a broken novel are these:

  1. Never calculate the length and never worry about the form while writing. Writing continuously is the only thing you need to focus on. Just write your mind, and let your inner mind pour into the text. Creative writing is a way to express your inner mind, i.e., subconscious. Let it flow from you.
  2. Never mind others’ ideas before completing it.
  3. Don’t worry about the structure, but select a strong story to write. The story mode will lead you ahead.
  4. Never take on strange themes and premises; write something very close to you.
  5. If the writing process stops, try to continue a few times, then go back and select another point in the story and continue. Or select another perspective.
  6. Always write at a particular time and place. Never leave long intervals.
