Being A Cultural ‘Hindu’
Dear Jayamohan,
One of the good articles I read recently wasBeing A Cultural ‘Hindu’. I came to know you are a Tamil writer. This is a timely article.
The problem you discussed in that article has been around for three hundred years. It is said that this is the reason why the Brahma Samaj was formed. To show our white rulers that ‘I am a Hindu, but I have nothing to do with the superstitions and devotions of Hinduism’
It was only after the arrival of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa that Indians got the courage to accept and express the devotion and beliefs of Hinduism. The pride in it came after Vivekananda.
A Hindu need not describe himself as a mere cultural Hindu. Hinduism has space for all kinds of beliefs and quests. Hinduism does not define anyone, every hindu is in a travel to find his way of salvation. That freedom is the strength of Hinduism.
