Dear Writer Jeyamohan,
I thought of writing this letter in Tamil, however I felt it would be better to write this letter in English.Your conceptualisation of “Unified wisdom’ is well explained in terms of philosophy. As a student of sociology I have read some sociological theories of French Philosopher August Comte and Max weber on my graduation and post graduation. In fact, all the Art courses have come from the discipline of Philosophy.Social philosophy was in the helm of academic discipline in the eighteenth century in the west.
We compare western philosophy to Eastern philosophy as far as its content concerned. For example the concept of “Mind” in western thought is purely a psychological term where as in Eastern though it is a super sensory tool as defined in Saiva Sidhantha.
Apart from all, the academic discipline Philosophy has lost its demand in the University campuses in India now .The reason is well known, the demand for science and technology courses is on the rise. There are some private institutions like Madras Sanskrit college and a few handful of private collegues offer courses on Philosophy.
There must be a revival for philosophy. It should be a culmination of Aesthetics, Application of philosophy and current ideas.A forum like “Unified Wisdom” will help to identify the revival of modern Indian philosophy.
In academics, we always ask for “learning outcome”.What will be the learning outcome of learning Modern Indian philosophy ? More logical questions are implied here.
I would suggest your Forum to frame a curriculum for Modern Indian Philosophy .In the curriculum, the forum should validate what is to be eliminated and what is to be included.Whether to include logic, art, music, modern literature, dance etc.It will be even better if your forum decides Indian Philosophy as an interdisciplinary studies . Once we form a curriculum, it can be offered as courses in the forum under different subjects. Say Modern philosophy, or Philosophy of Religion etc.
What we need is readership qualities among its members.Modern Philosophy can not be a static curriculum, it needs to be revised on and off. Examinations and experiments are not the aims, it should overhaul the thought processes of our society.Ultimate aim is to revamp the political, social ,dogmatic, and pseudo ideas. People who attend the course should carry on the light to the next generation.
I believe your forum”Unified Wisdom” is not far away from your thoughts.
T.Chidambaram.
Thovalai.
